Classifications Now Online
The USFA has put online all competitive members' rating. Check
your rating. If there
are any discrepancies, contact the Division officers of the Division in which you received
your rating. Remember, if you received a rating from an "out-of-division" event,
the Western PA Division can not do anything. If you received it at the Western PA Division
event, contact Division Chair Debbie Theriault at dtheriault@alltel.net.
The ratings are to be updated weekly, but also remember, a new
rating may not show up for a few weeks after you received it.

WPD Board Initiates Rating Incentive Program
An "incentive program" has been developed to
encourage WPD fencers to
participate in strong tournaments outside of the
Division. The following
policy is effective as of April 20, 2006:
A WPD member who travels out of the Division for a tournament, and
earns a
NEW A or B rating will:
1) be reimbursed for expenses up to $50 by the
WPD, upon presentation
of receipts for expenses
2) be awarded a $15.00 discount on entry fees
for the next 3 WPD events
that they attend.
Please note:
The fencer must be a member of the Western Pa. Division at
the time
that the new rating is awarded.
The $15 entry fee discount will only be valid for ONE YEAR
from
the date that the new rating is
awarded.
REIMBURSEMENT PROCEDURE
In order to be reimbursed, the fencer or their parent must do the following:
a) Send a written request for reimbursement to Frank Foley,
WPD Treasurer at:
637 Center Avenue
Pittsburgh Pa. 15229
b) Be sure to include the following with your request:
> Copies of receipts, totaling at least $50, related to the event
where the new rating change was earned
> The date, event and the name of the host division where the new
rating change was earned
> the name of the person who will be on the check
> the street or post office address where a reimbursement check
can be sent
c) Once the request has been received and the rating change
confirmed, a check for $50 will be sent to the fencer or
their parent.
d) The fencer, or their parent, must actually *request* the $50
reimbursement, in writing, from the WPD Treasurer. The $50
will not be sent to the newly rated fencer automatically, even if the
rating change is posted on the host division's website.
Stuff you must know for competitions
As we enter another fencing season, we'd
like to remind fencers what they need for ALL competitions. You must wear official fencing
knickers -- not white baseball pants or white denim pants -- for all competitions. IN THE
INTEREST OF SAFETY, FENCERS NOT WEARING OFFICIAL FENCING KNICKERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO
FENCE. All USFA rules will be enforced.
New Competition Registration Policy
For several years now, it has become increasingly difficult to
plan for local fencing tournaments. Local meets have had unusually strong attendance at
all levels. With this in mind, in order to encourage fencers to pre-register for all WPD
events, the Western Pa. Division Executive Committee recently adopted a new MEET
REGISTRATION POLICY.
Effective Aug. 19, 2007, registration is required
for all fencing events held within the W. Pa. Division.
Policy for Regular Competitions (non-qualifying):
 | Pre-registration must be made with the tournament host at least 3
days before the event.
|
 | Pre-registration may be made via e-mail, telephone and/or
askfred.net (if the host has indicated they have posted their meet on the askfred site).
|
 | If a fencer doesnt pre-register at least 3 days before the
event, they will be charged an additional $10 premium when they check-in at the meet.
|
Policy for Qualifiers: This will affect U-17 and U-20 Junior
Olympic Qualifiers
 | Pre-registration must be made with the tournament host at least 7
DAYS before the event.
|
 | Pre-registration may be made via e-mail, telephone and/or
askfred.net (if the host has indicated they have posted their meet on the askfred site).
|
 | If a fencer doesn't register at least 7 DAYS
before the event, they WILL NOT be permitted to fence. There
will be no exceptions.
|
Please note that there is no penalty for registering for an event
then choosing not to compete, so register anyway.
If you have registered and can not attend, please remove your name
from the askfred listing or email the host.
